30th Celebration: the Igglybuff baby deck explained

One of the most unremarkable cards in 30th Celebration now carries a deck of its own. Igglybuff (120/128) is a common with 30 HP, but the attack on it is the engine of an entire strategy.

How the attack works

The attack costs one Colorless Energy and deals 30 damage for each Pokémon on your own Bench that has a maximum of 30 HP. The maths are simple: five baby Pokémon on the Bench make 150 damage out of a card with 30 HP. With a tool card attached the figure rises to 180.

That is enough to clear most single stage ex Pokémon out of the way, in a turn where the opponent expects very little resistance.

The Pokémon line

Sixteen Pokémon cards form the foundation. Every Bench slot has to be filled with 30 HP Pokémon, otherwise the damage drops:

  • 4x Igglybuff
  • 4x Munchlax
  • 3x Budew
  • 3x Iono's Pichu
  • 2x Mime Jr.

The 44 Trainer cards

The rest of the deck consists entirely of Trainer cards, without a single Energy card beyond the basic need. The goal is to fill the Bench on turn one. It runs draw support such as Lillie's Determination and Boss's Orders, search and tools such as a Poké gadget and Buddy-Buddy Poffin, disruption including Pokémon Catcher, plus two Stadium cards. The source deck list is the German printing, so several Trainer names are given here in their German form in the German version of this article.

Is it worth it for buyers

The practical advantage of this deck is the price. Igglybuff is a common, and the baby Pokémon around it mostly are too. The expensive part is the Trainer cards, and those are needed in almost every modern deck anyway. Anyone opening 30th Celebration boosters usually already has the core sitting in their collection.

For newcomers this is one of the cheapest ways to build a functioning deck out of a current set.
